Parade of Breeds

Posted in Random with tags , on October 13, 2011 by kiyokotown

This post will only be interesting if you’re related to me.

… and even then!

Last night was the “Parade of Breeds” at Pierce College, where I take Equine Production every Wednesday from 7 to 10 pm (among other classes). As I explained to my parents in email, it was less “Parade” and more “forty horses being walked around a dirt arena while students are tested on their breed knowledge.”

In case you were wondering, my breed knowledge sucks! I totally need to study more. I got both the Missouri Foxtrotter and the Fjord wrong, which I feel I definitely should’ve known. Out of the forty horses shown, I think I only got about 27 right. Yikes.

Anyhow, here are a few clips for those interested parties. I’m sorry for the quality! I totally thought my Flip Mino was way better than this. Then again, I had to zoom in the whole time, so that’s probably it. I mainly use my Flip for quick close range videos. Also, the footage is a bit shaky and awkward; I was standing on the top row of bleachers and had a partially obstructed view.

Can you guess the breeds? Test your horse knowledge and I’ll post the answers later.

Here’s the first clip, right before the event started:

This one has a jerky swing near the halfway point … my bad.

Here is a fairly easy one:

Look how adorable this little guy is!

This last one is just for fun … it’s a Shetland and a Shire put together. I  missed the part where they put them nose to nose, and the little guy squealed … it was too cute. Fun fact: the tallest horse ever recorded was Sampson, a Shire horse! At four years old he stood 21.2 1/2 hands high! (A “hand” is four inches.) The average height of a Shire is 17.5 hands, and fittingly, Sampson was later renamed Mammoth.

Dear God, no.

Posted in Post A Day 2011, Random with tags , on February 18, 2011 by kiyokotown

What’s your favorite magazine? Mine’s Mental Floss.

Ever since I got laid off from my low-paying but seriously beloved assistant editor job, I have had to cut back on some items now deemed overtly indulgent.

One of those casualties was my favorite publication, Mental Floss. A second runner up, but by a long shot, would be either Real Simple or Entertainment Weekly. And then maybe, maybe Glamour.

I’ve never been into fashion (yikes – in Girl World, admitting that fact is almost sinful) but Glamour has a nice balance of  the lifestyle pieces I enjoy and the fashion spreads that I always skip. The girls are never my body type – I’m  5’3″ and between 108 – 115 pounds, depending, and I have short legs and big hips. Above all, though, I generally find the clothes … weird and unattractive. At least for me.

What’s your favorite magazine?

As I am writing this, I’m starting to reconsider the 20-something dollar subscription to Mental Floss hardly seems like much. And I used to get so excited when I saw those colorful covers in my mailbox.

That’s it. I’m going to go re-subscribe right now!

… Smelly Man in my Math class,

Please, please, for the love of God, take a shower. Or brush your teeth. Or chew some gum!

Do something! You are very stinky.

I’m sorry, but it’s true, and I had to spend almost three hours sitting less than two feet from you. My head started to hurt from holding my breath.

Thank you,

Post #34: What I’m currently addicted to

Making crossword puzzles!

If you Google “crossword puzzle maker” you will find plenty of different options, but this is the first one I used:

I initially set out to make a fun, easy crossword puzzle for my eight and five-year-old niece and nephew for Valentine’s Day, but I soon became hopelessly addicted. I revised and expanded their puzzle several times and then made three more just for fun.

If you like word puzzles at all, I urge you to try a crossword puzzle maker. They are fun to make for family and friends because you can personalize them to include  names  and trivia. For example, I used clues that referenced a recent family party and various family member’s names.

If you don’t like word puzzles and games, you are probably wondering how you came to read such a giant dork’s blog. 🙂

Post #33: M&M Pretzels: Yummy, but lame

Posted in Random on February 8, 2011 by kiyokotown

Inside a package of M&M Pretzels, you will find fourteen pieces of candy.

That’s it.

The above photo shows only thirteen candies – that’s because I ate one before I decided to blog about it.

I will say this: they are good! But at $1.00 a pack (at least that’s what I paid at the gas station) I would rather buy a bag of Flips, which has way more quantity per bag for about the same price.
